Monday, October 24, 2016 - seminar by Ilya Kossovskiy - The Associated Differential Equations Method in CR-geometry PDF Print

Seminar on differential geometry will continue on Monday, October 24, 2016, at 10.00, in the lecture room M5 by the lecture presented by Ilya Kossovskiy

Title: The Associated Differential Equations Method in CR-geometry

Abstract: It was first observed by E.Cartan and B.Segre that the geometry of completely integrable systems of differential equations is parallel, in a certain sense, to CR-geometry. This idea, undeservedly forgotten for almost 70 years, was revisited recently and lead to important developments in CR-geometry. In addition, one obtains a certain dictionary between the two theories. In this talk, I will outline the latter connection, and discuss its recent applications to CR-geometry, as well as possible applications to Dynamics and Differential Equations.

The seminar will continue on October 31 by the lecture of Ivan Minchev (TBA).

Mathematical trips PDF Print

Dear Friends of Mathematics,

we would like to inform you that the beginning of the new academic year also means the beginning of mathematical trips! These are tourist trips for all students and employees of Department of Mathematics and Statistics where you can get to know the surroundings of Brno and talk about mathematics as well as about anything else.

The initial mathematical trip will take place on Saturday 24th of September, 2016. You are hereby cordially invited.

Meet at 09:30 at the endstation of tram no. 1 in Řečkovice. Our plan is a 20 km hike along tourist roads, partly rocky ground, partly following roadways, back to the starting point in Řečkovice.

More detailed description: starting in Řečkovice we visit Nature park Baba and cross it to reach Kuřim. - Leaving Kuřim we get to Babí lom and its lookout tower. Then we follow the tourist red road to Lelekovice and Mokrá Hora, then back to Řečkovice. You can end the hike in Kuřim (9 km) where you can get a train or a bus to Brno.

Take food for the whole day with you.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Remark (about the origin):

The idea of mathematical trips is inspired by "mathematical trips" founded by Otakar Borůvka, famous mathematician of Brno and professor of Masaryk University. These trips were organized by mathematicians of Masaryk University and Comenius University in Bratislava in 1940s to 1980s.

Looking forward to see you soon,

Jan Slovák, Director of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics
Jana Bartoňová, Main organizer
Jonatan Kolegar, Trip consultant

Informal meeting at the occasion of the Autumn Semester start PDF Print

Dear Colleagues,

I am inviting you to the informal meeting at the occasion of the Autumn Semester start.

On Wednesday, September 21, with small refreshment at hand, we could talk about both news and dreams. I promise answers to your questions. We shall meet in parallel in both common rooms for the students and employees (at the ground floor and the first floor), at 4pm. I believe this will be a good opportunity to talk and so we shall stay longer and it makes sense to come late too.

I hope to meet soon!

Best regards,

Jan Slovak
(director of the department)
