Mathematics colloquium Designed primarily for master's students, doctoral candidates, and faculty, the Mathematics colloquium features presentations on broad research trends and recent findings in all of mathematics. Each talk is tailored to be clear and approachable for non-specialists. Everyone is welcome to attend regardless the affiliation, research area or career stage. The colloquium builds on the legacy of traditional colloquia in mathematics. The talks are limited to 45 minutes, followed by questions an informal discussion over light refreshments. For further questions and details, contact the organisers (filakovsky(at)math.muni.cz). TIME and PLACE In the fall semester of 2026, the Mathematics colloquium takes place on Thursdays at 16:00 in lecture room M1, Building 08, Kotlářská 2, 611 37 Brno. The speakers represent various academic sections of the department.
The schedule is: 22.10. Lenka Přibylová (Applied mathematics and statistics)
- Title: Silent as a Fish?
- Abstract: Fish are not as silent as they may seem. Some species produce remarkably regular vocalizations generated by highly synchronized neural activity. In this talk, I will use the vocal motor system of the plainfin midshipman fish as a case study to illustrate how ideas from nonlinear dynamics can help us understand collective brain rhythms and the organization of neural circuits whose basic principles are deeply conserved across vertebrate evolution.
5.11. John Bourke (Algebra, Topology, and Number Theory) 19.11. Petr Zemánek (Mathematical Analysis) 3.12. Katharina Neusser (Geometrical Analysis)
