The historical development of education in Brno

In the 13th century there were two parish schools in Brno (St. James church
and St. Peter church).

1578, the establishment of the Jesuitical grammar school in Brno; from
1773 it was under the governance of state. Jakub Kresa (1648-1715),
a
famous
mathematician,
studied there.

1774, obligatory school attendance was introduced for children aged 6 -
12. There was only one parish school (St. James church) in Brno at
that time.

1775, the establishment of the Normalschule. This school prepared
teachers for elemantary schools in Moravia.

1808, the establishment of the Philosophical College. Two-year education
in this school was a continuation of the grammar school education.

1849, the Grammar school was joined with the Philosophical College.

1847 (28th November), Emperor Ferdinand I. approved the establishment
of a Technical School in Brno.

1849 (December), the first five professors of the Technical College were
appointed.

1851, the establishment of the first (German) secondary technical school
(Realschule), famous natural scientist Johann
Gregor Mendel (1822-1884) was a professor of this school.

1852, the establishment of the German technical school (Gewerbeschule).

1857, the establishment of the second (German) secondary technical school
(Realschule).

1867, the establishment of the first Czech grammar school (Gymnasium).

1871, the establishment of the second (German) grammar school.

1880, the establishment of the first Czech secondary technical school (Realschule).

1899, Czech Technical University of Franz Josef was established in Brno,
now Brno University of
Technology.

1918, Brno had 46 German elementary schools and only 9 Czech elementary
schools. After the foundation of the Czechoslovak Republic, 50 % (in 1919)
and 80 % (in 1925) children attended Czech schools.

1918 (December), the establishment of the College of Veterinary Medicine,
now University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical
Sciences Brno

1919 (January), the establishment of Masaryk
University.

1919 (July), the establishment of the University of Agriculture, now Mendel
University of Agriculture and Forestry Brno.

1939 (17th November), Czech universities were closed by the Nazis.

1945 (October), the German Technical University was dissolved by a decree
of the President of the Czechoslovak Republic.

1947, the establishment of the Janáček Academy
of Performing Arts.

1951, the establishment of the Military Academy
