Otakar Borůvka (*May 10, 1899 - July 22, 1995) was an outstanding personality of mathematical life in Czechoslovakia. His scientific work covered many fields of mathematics and reflected the main trends of the development of the 20th century mathematics. He received the honorary citizen of the Brno city.
 

Topics of the conference correspond to the areas of scientific interest to O. Borůvka: especially differential and functional equations, history of mathematics, algebra, geometry and graph theory. The purpose of this symposium is to present new results connected with the scientific activity of O. Borůvka, to commemorate his main results and influence on mathematics, mainly in the Czech and Slovak Republics.
 

Conference site: The conference will start in Brno, the University Main Hall (Faculty of Law, Veveří 70), and will continue in Chateau Valtice (hotel ``Hubertus''), situated in the center of the famous wine-growing region, 50 km south of Brno.

Registration: will be possible at
    Department of Mathematics, Janáčkovo nám. 2a, Brno, on Monday May 10 from 8 am to 5 pm (it will be possible to deposit your luggage here).

    May 10: Brno, Honorary Meeting, 10:00 - 15.30
            9:30 - Departure of the bus from the Dept.of Math., MU, Janáčkovo nám. 2a
          10:00 - Unvaling of the tombstone of O. Borůvka at the Honorary Cemetery of the Brno city
          11:00 - 12:30 Honorary session to 100th birth anniversary of O.Borůvka, Main University Hall, Faculty of Law, Veveří
          12:30 - 14:00 Lunch (Veveří 70)
          14:00 - 15:30 Cultural program with folk music ensemble, ``Hradišťan''  Main University Hall, Veveří 70
          17:00 - Departure by the conference buses to Valtice from Dept. of Math., MU
          Valtice 20:00
                Evening session dedicated to the reminiscence of personal contacts with O. Borůvka

     May 11:  Valtice
            Scientific program in sessions, cca 9:00 - 12:30 and 14:00 - 18:00
            20:00 - Evening party with folk music and wine tasting

    May 12: Valtice
            9:00 - 12:30, continuation of the scientific program
          14:00 - Departure by the conference buses to Břeclav (train station) and to Brno.

    We expect about 80 participants of the Symposium and a larger auditorium of the Honorary Meeting on Monday.

Scientific program consists of half-hour lectures, short communications (15 min.) and posters. The Conference language is English. Concerning possible exceptions, please contact the organizers.

    The following preliminary time schedule is supposed for contributions in the fields of differential and functional equations:
            Tuesday (May 11) half-hour lectures and posters,
            Wednesday (May 12) short communications.
    The program of contributions in other fields will be specified in the conference materials.

Abstract: Authors of contributed papers are requested to submit, preferably by e-mail, an abstract of talks (not exceeding half a typed page), including the full address of each author and e-mail address. Deadline for abstracts submission is  April 15, 1999. Please check our web site for an abstract template in LaTeX format.

Conference Fee: The Conference Fee is 100 USD if paid before April 15, 1999, and 120 USD if paid later. It covers the usual conference materials (including a tape-recording with the original Borůvka's narration, coffee and conference buses), accommodation and meals during the Symposium, started with lunch May 10 to lunch May 12.

Direct transport to Valtice: From Bratislava to Břeclav we can recommend the train at 15:25 (arrival 16:28), 17:40 (arrival at 18:36); from Břeclav to Valtice the bus at 17:10 (arrival at 17:43), 18:25 (arrival 18:58) and the train at 16:48 (arrival at 17:03), 19:05 (arrival at 19:20).
